Mayor Choosing & Annual Mayor’s Awards

The Annual Council meeting took place on Thursday 9 May 2019 at Hayle Day Care Centre.  During the meeting Councillor Clive Polkinghorne was successfully confirmed as Hayle Town Mayor and Councillor Steve Benney as Hayle Deputy Mayor for the second consecutive year.  Congratulations to both!

Presentations of the Mayor’s Annual Awards followed the elections, with last year’s winners receiving replica awards to keep.  This year’s awards were presented to:

Mike Stuckey – Male Citizen of the Year 2019/2020 for his tireless volunteer work with the U3A and Hayle Day Care Centre and for his fundraising efforts.

Margaret Jamieson – Female Citizen of the Year 2019/2020 largely for her dedicated commitment to the beaches through her voluntary role as a member of Save Our Sand Hayle.  Unfortunately, Mrs Jamieson had been unable to attend and her award was accepted on her behalf by Alison Stuckey, last year’s winner of the award.

Royal British Legion Hayle Branch – Organisation of the Year 2019/2020 in particular for its Poppy Appeal fundraising for invalided and retired service personnel and its contribution to the centenary commemorations of the end of the First World War.  Alan Conquest, President of the Hayle Branch of the Legion accepted the award on behalf of the organisation.

Hayle Surf Life Saving Club Nippers – Youth Organisation of the Year 2019/2020. The mayor broke with tradition and chose the Nippers for the second time and thanked them for their continued work teaching youngsters to be safe in the sea and life-saving skills.  The Nipper Girl Captain, Holly, and the Nipper Boy Captain, Michael, received the award from the mayor on behalf of the organisation.

Sgt Emily Brown – Young Person of the Year 2019/2020 for her dedication to carrying out her duties as Mayor’s Cadet the previous year and for being a shining example to other young people.  Unfortunately, Sgt Brown had been unable to attend due to illness and Flt Lt Wardley accepted the award on her behalf.

Following the Mayor’s Awards presentations, the Town Plate was awarded to John Bennett, former Hayle Town Councillor, for his many hundreds, if not thousands, of hours’ work on the Hayle Neighbourhood Plan and for chairing the Hayle Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group.  The town is indebted to Mr Bennett as the Hayle Neighbourhood Plan now enables the people of Hayle to have some influence on local planning decisions.

The mayor was delighted to confirm that the Mayor’s Cadet for 2019/2020 was Sgt Emily Brown of 1900 (West Cornwall) Squadron, ATC, who had served the mayor diligently the previous year.

At the close of the meeting, all guests were invited to join Councillor Polkinghorne and the rest of Hayle Town Council at the Civic Reception.
