Hayle Heritage Centre re-opened on 12 April 2017. The centre has had a makeover during the winter with lots more exciting displays, artefacts and children’s activities on offer.
To celebrate their new look they ran a coffee morning so everyone was able to take a look around the new displays and eat some yummy cakes. In the afternoon there was a family friendly craft workshop in making paper mâché baskets. On Saturday the 15th there was a drop in children’s Easter craft session and an Easter egg hunt. Children and families needed to solve a puzzle through the centre to claim their Easter egg!
A new display explores the topic of ‘Hayle at Leisure’, showcasing objects relating to the regatta, early surfing and sport in the town. The redeveloped ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ features WWII memorabilia, Cornish studio pottery and more. They also have a new dressing up space where children can become historical figures from the town. A new shop area has been created offering books, cards and unique gifts, including original artwork made in the town.
This year you will be able to watch volunteers and staff working on their collection at our ‘Heritage in Action’ area, witness the careful restoration of the Biggleston paper collection, or the cataloguing and photography of the ever-growing permanent collection.
Their website has also had a makeover; you will be able to view previous exhibitions and events, listen to 40 oral history stories, and see some of their most treasured items in the star object collection. The website address remains the same (www.hayleheritagecentre.org.uk). It’s hoped that the website will launch at the beginning of April.
Hayle Heritage Centre relies on the enduring support of its volunteers. If you have a love of history and have a few hours to spare please get in contact. Equally, if you have any artefacts or material that you would like to donate to the centre they would be keen to hear from you.
The Heritage Centre is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 11am to 4pm; they are also going to trial being open on the first Saturday of each month from 11am to 3pm.
