The photograph was taken in the winter of 2018 when the so-called ‘Beast from the East’ hit Britain. The onset of Anticyclone Hartmut saw temperatures in the UK dramatically plummet, with 10 days of intense cold and heavy snowfall. During this period, it was so cold that the falling snow set on Hayle Beach. This is an extremely rare occurrence as the moisture from the sand would usually melt the snow instantly on landing.

I ventured down to the beach to capture this rare moment. The receding tide was carrying the snow and ice out to sea, leaving three clear bands of snow, sand and water against a bright blue sky. The snow looked completely alien against the golden sands and azure tones, it is hard to believe the scene could be real. I knew I had captured something special, possibly once in a generation.

The medium: Photography

The size of the work: 40x50cm

The price of the work (if applicable): £120

Of all the beaches I am familiar with, none of them have such a dramatic change in the tide as Hayle Beach. At low tide, it can feel like a trek across the desert in search of water! These two ships had been in the mouth of Hayle River for a long time, and I always had had it in my mind that these would make a great subject for a photograph. I had to wait for the height of summer, so that the sunset would provide a dramatic backdrop for these well worn ships, Although the tide was low, the river was still flowing, so I got as close as I could to the boats, allowing the water up to my knees. With a long exposure I was able to smooth out the surface of the water, framing the boats and the harbour wall in a beautiful golden light.

Title of work: Godrevy Misty Midnight Seas

The medium: Photography

The size of the work: 60x80cm

The price of the work (if applicable): £200

The Northern Lights are notoriously, well, northern, in nature, so when the chance to see them does arise in the southernmost county of Cornwall, the sound of astrophotographers rushing for their cameras can be heard far and wide. With anticipation at an all-time high at the beginning of 2023 for this celestial show, I found myself poised on the rocks below the cliffs at Godrevy under a cloudless sky, waiting patiently for tell-tale green flickers above. Alas, in true allusive form, the Aurora never made an appearance, but I was instead rewarded with an equally unexpected sight which resulted in this picture.

Upon my West Coast arrival, the half-moon was descending into a moonset directly behind Godrevy. Once it had set, the night sky became much more even, and the stars beamed brightly from an inky canvas. Interestingly, while the moon had slipped over the horizon, it had created this beautiful, soft orange glow directly behind Godrevy, brushing the night sky with a rare colour – something I had never really seen before. What’s more, as the low tide started to come in again, the long-exposure of the night sky on my camera also captured this ethereal, misty effect billowing around the craggy rocks at my feet. An unexpected surprise, and a capture I’m really proud of.
