Step into Action - The Mayor's Sponsored Walk |
Mayor, Councillor John Coombe, and Ex-Mayor Councillor Paul Birch led a Sponsored Walk on Sunday 7th September 2008. There was an excellent turnout and the weather was just right for walking. All monies raised will be shared between Cornwall Hospice Care (St Julia's) and Children's Hospice South West.

 |
Pictured above at the start, the Mayor thanked the walkers for their support. "Every penny raised will be split equally between the two nominated charities", he said.
Town Clerk, Eleanor Giggal and Councillor Jayne Ninnes, manage the registration process and the emergency contact point. |

The walk was supported by Hayle PCSOs, Kevin Youngman and Jenny Hosking. We were also supported by our local firefighting team from Camborne (they're in red shirts in the top picture). |

King George V Memorial Walk - Closure to Motor Traffic.
Public Consultation
|
At the council meeting on 4 September, the council resolved:
To examine the ramifications of closing King George V Memorial Walk to motor traffic
(except for access), either at weekends, at all times, or at such times as the Council shall direct
and to undertake a consultation prior to any such closing.
The Council also directs the Clerk to report on options and costs for effecting the closure.
Hayle Town Council owns the walk and the suggestion to consider the possibility of closing it to motor traffic was prompted by the increase in traffic over recent years and the potential for huge increases over the next decade with the harbour development and the requirement of the Regional Spatial Strategy to build a large number of new homes in Hayle. The road is not adopted by the County and consequently repairs are the responsibility of Hayle Town Council. Heavy vehicles cause a lot more damage to the road surface than cars and there has been an increase in these recently and a likely further increase in the future.
Another consideration was the success of weekend road closures in other parts of Britain which allowed walkers, cyclists, skate boarders, roller bladers - any non-motorised users - to enjoy these areas safely.
It is probable that the Walk would be closed at only one end allowing easy access for residents, gardeners and maintenance people. |
 |
This illustration is purely illustrative as the method of closure, the signage and the
location of the barrier have yet to be determined should the scheme go ahead.
|
The Council would like to receive the views of town residents. Please contact the Town Clerk by email, letter or phone to express your view. Some questions to be considered are:
- Do you support closure of the road?
- If so, do you support closure at weekends or 7 days a week (or any other times)?
- Should any closure be seasonal or all year?
- Do you have any preference for how or where the road should be closed?

County Council Member Community Grant Scheme |
From August 2008 each of the Councils 82 County Councillors has been allocated a fund of £3,000 to provide financial support to projects that benefit their local communities.
In order that the Council can ensure that each individual grant application is dealt with fairly and objectively a standard grant application process has been introduced. This gives the applicant the opportunity to clearly explain the purpose of the application and why the funding is required.

Hayle Estuary Management Plan (Hayle EMP) Published
|
The Hayle Estuary is an area which has a rich and diverse wildlife, landscape and historic heritage and is not only cherished by the local community but recognized both nationally and internationally. Estuaries in general, and Hayle is no exception, provide recreational opportunities and employment for local people. The challenge set by the Hayle Estuary Management Plan (Hayle EMP) is to conserve the natural and historic heritage of the estuary, which is unique, but at the same time encourage appropriate opportunities and give full recognition to the important needs of commerce, tourism and leisure interests. The Hayle EMP seeks to identify and bring together these key interests and incorporate them in a single document, making reference only to existing reports, legislation and other issues impacting on the estuary.
If you have any comments on the EMP send them to the Town Clerk for forwarding to the Hayle Harbour Advisory Committee.
